CT Survivor Portraits Experience

Trish Skelly

The human spirit has an amazing capacity to overcome adversity.

Celebrating with portraits of the everyday survivors that live amongst us.

My name is Trish and I survived a near death experience,
from a propane water heater explosion.

CT Portraits of everyday survivors that live amongst us.

Strong. Grateful. Blessed.

  1. I survived rape and confinement for three days when I was 21.

Dealing with the loss of my baby.

Living with a 54% Disability from a work injury.

Most of all PTSD from my son and I being in the blast on 9-2-21.

  2. Propane water heater explosion in my face from improper installation the day before.  Knowing my son was right down the other end of the basement sleeping.  There was one way out. We tried to put it out, however it was too fast and we had to run out of the house with the fire on our backs.   I obtained flash burns on my face, similar to a chemical peal.  My eyes, nose (from inhaling), and my lips/mouth were all affected.  Along with instantly draining all the moisture from my hair and body.  I couldn’t get enough water for two weeks. Most of my hair was so dry after the fire that I had to have it cut shorter because it was breaking off.

I have many nightmares about losing my son Hunter, and dogs.  Thank God my husband Doug, and daughter Stephanie, were not home as well as my puppy Miss Edna. She is now my service dog for the PTSD.

  3. Sometimes, however I am BLESSED with a great family, chosen family and friends, along with the greatest community!!!

  4. Family (my husband Doug, daughter Stephanie, son Hunter), our pets the best family, and Chosen Family, people in my neighborhood, Friends along with the Greatest Community.  Our Fire department.

I am in Therapy.  My Therapist has helped me so much.

  5. Hunter and I working together to get out of the home safely.  Hunter keeping a clear head and doing what needed to be done.  i.e.  helping move the cars out of the driveway so the fire department can do their jobs when they got there without them in their way, and getting the dogs into a safe space down the road.

  6. My family (this includes my dogs)

Resilience is essential for our survival and well-being, both as individuals and as a society. It helps us to bounce back from setbacks and learn from our mistakes, allowing us to become stronger and more adaptable. Sharing those feelings inspires others to continue their journey.
