Euphoria is a gritty HBO drama with an extreme story line that has become a cultural phenomonan. TikTok and instagram are full of makeup, clothing and nail inspiration drawn from the show – The Euphoria aesthetic has gone mainstream.

Styling this shoot was so much fun! Thanks to Katie, Erinn and Regan, who we imagined as a group of friends who attend the same high school as the characters who star in Euphoria, and Sam for her help behind the scenes.

To say that Davy’s work on the epic teen drama has sparked a makeup movement would be an understatement. Merging teen reality with escapist fantasy, Davy is catapulting Gen Z’s makeup obsession—and unbridled experimentation—into the mainstream with sparkle and nuance. “Teenagers are switching things up constantly,” she explains, “Gen Z uses makeup not only to portray who they are, but who they want to be that day.” Lauren Valenti for Vogue.

Euphoria‘s makeup department head Doniella Davy says she draws inspiration for the show’s unique beauty looks, like dramatic under-eye glitter that resembles tears and neon eyeliner, from real-life teens and social media. She adds that the fast-paced nature of the Internet combined with Gen Z’s willingness to experiment mean that there’s even more opportunity for Gen Z to create.

The highly stylized series has also become a cultural touchpoint for the trademark freedom and fluidity embodied in its depiction of Gen Z—nowhere more apparent than in the characters’ fashion and beauty choices”. Time Magazine

Editorial photography is a type of photography that aims to tell a story or portray a concept. Editorial photography is commonly found in magazines, newspapers, editorial features, and journalism. Unlike commercial photography, editorial photography relies much more on story than it does on a brand.

Black and white photography is and has been a powerful visual medium, removing the color from an image tells a story in a different form. Ted Grant said, “When you photograph people in color you photograph their clothes. When you photograph people in black and white, you photograph their soul!” I didn’t shoot the images in black and white, but we did make all the details black and white. The styling, the set and the props were all black and white so that in the majority of the images all that remained in color was the beautiful skin tones and I love how they illuminate these images.

I could have photographed this set over and over again and I was thrilled to have Gabby and Katie in the studio. Don’t they look amazing?

By the way, if you are thinking of using these sticker decals to decorate let me know, and I can give you some removal techniques. Let’s just say that they go on a lot faster than they come off and we’ll leave it at that!

Vogue is fashion’s bible, the world’s leading fashion publication. It was founded in 1892 as a weekly periodical focused on society and fashion, and was subscribed to by the New York elite. Condé Nast (1873-1942) bought the magazine in 1909 and began to transform it into a powerhouse.

One single item of clothing can lead to an entire styled shoot….. in this case I saw the black and white geometric coat at a thrift store and knew we had to have it for a styled shoot. It gave me 60’s Twiggy vibes so the idea of the black and white styling grew and really, who doesn’t love polka dots and stripes? Erinn and Leah helped to bring my idea of a very editorial-style photo shoot to life and when they saw the portraits for the first time they knew they belonged on the cover of a magazine!

Back to the 90s!

Styled shoots are the most popular perk of being a member of the Planet Photo Tribe. I wanted to submit images for the One Collective Vintage Fashion challenge and Katie was willing to model for the shoot – we just had to pick up an era and create a style board.

I was organizing my closet and I came across the coach bag I had in the early 90s, and there was the inspiration we needed. We were going back to the Nineties! With the memories of classic 90s movies and music ringing in my ears, I found a pair of vintage Hugo Boss tweed pants and we put together the rest of the outfit around those. Katie’s mom and I went back in time and styled Katie as the cool girl we wish we had hung out with at school!

The Pinterest board we used to style our shoot

It was a little chilly at the school bus garage but Katie was a trooper and we had so much fun. I think she killed it – can you hear Nivarna and Oasis playing on your SONY walkman?

We tried to convince Katie to wear her 90s outfit for the first day back at school after winter break but I am not sure she was going to do it.

Sam as Trinity!

The original Matrix movie was released in 1999. We were living in Copenhagen and we saw the film at the largest movie theater in Denmark. It was pretty revolutionary at the time, and after watching it again recently, it’s amazing how impressive the effects still look. The styling for the first movie was dramatic and the long leather coats have been widely imitated.

The Phone Booth Project recently installed a traditional pay phone on West St in New Milford.  I have been driving past it, on my way to the studio, for the last couple of months and scheming about how we could shoot around it. Sam was game to be Trinity for a Matrix inspired styled shoot, so the rest as they say is history!

Why do I do styled shoots? I LOVE the creativity of planning a styled shoot. The inspiration can come from anywhere really, in this case driving by the phone booth led to thinking of movies that featured phone booths. Of course Superman came to mind, but I have been seeing ads for the new Matrix movie and I remembered the scene when Trinity has to find a phone booth so that she can call to get out of trouble with Agent Smith. Trinity is cool and pretty bad a** so it was really fun to create Sam’s outfits for the shoot. If you haven’t seen the original movie you really should check it out! Let me know what you think in the comments.
