Euphoria is a gritty HBO drama with an extreme story line that has become a cultural phenomonan. TikTok and instagram are full of makeup, clothing and nail inspiration drawn from the show – The Euphoria aesthetic has gone mainstream.

Styling this shoot was so much fun! Thanks to Katie, Erinn and Regan, who we imagined as a group of friends who attend the same high school as the characters who star in Euphoria, and Sam for her help behind the scenes.

To say that Davy’s work on the epic teen drama has sparked a makeup movement would be an understatement. Merging teen reality with escapist fantasy, Davy is catapulting Gen Z’s makeup obsession—and unbridled experimentation—into the mainstream with sparkle and nuance. “Teenagers are switching things up constantly,” she explains, “Gen Z uses makeup not only to portray who they are, but who they want to be that day.” Lauren Valenti for Vogue.

Euphoria‘s makeup department head Doniella Davy says she draws inspiration for the show’s unique beauty looks, like dramatic under-eye glitter that resembles tears and neon eyeliner, from real-life teens and social media. She adds that the fast-paced nature of the Internet combined with Gen Z’s willingness to experiment mean that there’s even more opportunity for Gen Z to create.

Editorial photography is a type of photography that aims to tell a story or portray a concept. Editorial photography is commonly found in magazines, newspapers, editorial features, and journalism. Unlike commercial photography, editorial photography relies much more on story than it does on a brand.

Black and white photography is and has been a powerful visual medium, removing the color from an image tells a story in a different form. Ted Grant said, “When you photograph people in color you photograph their clothes. When you photograph people in black and white, you photograph their soul!” I didn’t shoot the images in black and white, but we did make all the details black and white. The styling, the set and the props were all black and white so that in the majority of the images all that remained in color was the beautiful skin tones and I love how they illuminate these images.

I could have photographed this set over and over again and I was thrilled to have Gabby and Katie in the studio. Don’t they look amazing?

By the way, if you are thinking of using these sticker decals to decorate let me know, and I can give you some removal techniques. Let’s just say that they go on a lot faster than they come off and we’ll leave it at that!

Styled Studio Shoot

Vogue is fashion’s bible, the world’s leading fashion publication. It was founded in 1892 as a weekly periodical focused on society and fashion, and was subscribed to by the New York elite. Condé Nast (1873-1942) bought the magazine in 1909 and began to transform it into a powerhouse.

One single item of clothing can lead to an entire styled shoot….. in this case I saw the black and white geometric coat at a thrift store and knew we had to have it for a styled shoot. It gave me 60’s Twiggy vibes so the idea of the black and white styling grew and really, who doesn’t love polka dots and stripes? Erinn and Leah helped to bring my idea of a very editorial-style photo shoot to life and when they saw the portraits for the first time they knew they belonged on the cover of a magazine!
